I am a very pathetic company when you take me to watch a movie. I don’t even know what screenplay is. I cry during movies. Get entertained, and come back. I have never read a movie review in my life. When people talk of re-recording, background score, editing, screenplay, it all probably means the same to me , as what floccinauccinihilipilification means to you. I am an ardent rajini fan. I love the out and out entertainment and masala that his movies offer. “Kanna, naa oru thadave sonna, nooru thadave sonna madhiri..” – I have watched like a hundred times.
But if I were to pick a movie, that has influenced me in more than one way, it’s unarguably – Anbe Sivam. I fell in love with that movie the first time I watched it. Even more, the second time. Kamal Hasan, epitomized perfection. How many ever more times, I watch it, the movie leaves the same impression that it did, the first time. Portraying an ideology that is against what is prevalent, and what has been fed since very young age to all of us, questioning audacious beliefs – only legends can create such stuff. Well-defined characters, and a strong storyline. An impeccable movie.
Michael madhana kamarajani, and PANCHATHANTHIRAM – I have lost count of the number of times I have watched these two movies. Everytime I watch these movies, I invariably find a dialogue that I would have missed out the previous time. I used to listen to Michael Mad in my music player on the way to college. It could be someone else’s script even. It doesn’t matter. Kamal’s deliveries at the right time. Sensible humour from an established actor can only be seen in Kamal’s movies. And I have oodles of respect for him, just for this. People say, Mumbai express is brilliant too, but I haven’t got to watch it yet.
I still regret not watching Hey Ram. Somehow, I have never been able to see more than first ten minutes of that movie.
I read that today is Kamal Hasan’s birthday. Three cheers to the man, who has been a revolutionary. To the man, who has taken tamil cinema places. To the man, who raised the intelligence level of his audience. To the man, who looks more young with every passing day.
I am sure, he will be an inspiration to a lot of people, just like how he enabled me to question things that weren’t supposed to be, and got me more confused.
p.s: I am sure there are loads of other movies of kamal, that I have missed. Drop in the list, in the comments space.

Just looking at the entertainment value, Sathi Leelavathi and Vasool Raja should have been included there
Good tribute to THE actor
Vasool raja in Ktv now sidd!!!
True! Especially Crazy mohan-kamal combo rocks. Kamal’s skill to identify real talents makes him retain his favourite set of people in many movies, say, santhanabharati, nassar to name a few. His long term association with crazy mohan, mouli, singeetham sreenivasa rao et al, nurtured the humour sense in him much more!
Happy b’day Kamal haasan! you will remain forever as my childhood hero-crush!
Ha ha!
Right said!! Nassar – Reminds me. I missed out avvai shanmughi
Of Course, to quote a few of the famous unforgettable dialogues from his movies
1.MMKR – graamamum kook a? neengalum cooku
I mean what i mean! ‘enna ellarum meen meen ngra? ‘
2.Dasavataram – Kadavul illenu sollale, irundha nalla irukum nu dhan solren!
‘Ethanai murai Hari om Hari om (arivom) endru un vaayaleye solla veithan paar! ‘
3. Panchathanthiram – reddy oda blue sister, oru pachai driver oda odi poita!
Your post inspires me to write one on the same theme in my blog too. Hopefully, some time soon
And yes, write write
Pammal K Sambandham: Don’t put words in my mouths
nice post
\m/.
I somehow like kuruthi punal too though it is very heavy.. And i watched hey ram but dint quite understand what he was trying to say!
Hmm. Yes de. Hey ram, even I found the beginning very cluttered. Nothing will make sense. May be, I should sit down with someone who has watched the movie and watch it!!
If you havent watched Kurudhipunal you _must_ watch it !! Its one of those classics. The best Indian cop movie IMO. Funny that you could never watch Hey Ram for more than 5 mins. I had the same problem with Usual suspects. I used to watch the movie for like 10 mins and give up until one fine day I watched it completely that I could appreciate it
Hmmm. I think I should. My boss, a bengali, told me he watched the translated version of Kurudhipunal, and told me, he was moved by the brilliance. I found Hey ram, difficult to comprehend. I think I must have watched in school, and never got to watch it in college. Thanks. I shall definitely add these two movies to the list.
p.s: I discarded inception too, for like three times, beginning to see it, until my brother literally pushed me to watching it.
So, you know.
Hey, cheers ! I agree. Watching Kamal perform is a pleasure ! I look out for his simple gestures and pauses in every movie. He gives these so much importance that it shows how committed he is ! Man, can he be thorough..
I have watched Panchathanthiram and Michael Madhana Kama Rajan a zillion times too. And yeah, Anbe Sivam is a classic. I give credits to the director for that movie though. Wish he made more such ! And another movie I just love is Kadhala Kadhala, pure entertainment !
I want one post on Rajni and Padaiyappa, Abi
Ha ha!!
Kadhala kadhala. Chanceless. Noor mahal
It should be fun. I remember, my dad bought the original CD of that movie, and we watched it so many times, that it used to get stuck in the “vayasaanalum, un azhagum..” scene!!
And, padayappa laam, thalaivar, only terror
ha ha..
Though I cant whistle, I would so want to, for these movies !
Guess who the supposed director of Anbe Sivam is ?? Its Sundar C .. But you if you watch the other movies of Sundar C as director, none of them even resemble the tone of this movie. A clear indication of kamal’s influence on his direction. It so happens that kamal influences a lot of directors who directed him in the past decade..
well there is no comparison between rajni sir and kamal sir both are class of their own and well I love kamal more just coz of his love for the movies and his guts to try out things he tried bourne in a tamil movie 20 years b4 the hollywood people got the idea dats how fat fetched he is and if i forget abt guna and aalavandhan or even kuruthi poonal i wud be shot dead by all his ardent fans coz all these movies are hated by people coz it was way ahead of it times when it released the thing he used in aalavanthan was the thing whcih was used in kill bill that is when action starts bring in animation…. he can sing act direct write lyrics story and screenplay
amazinggg person
